Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. South Dakota has one MFT license; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- A master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from a program accredited by COAMFTE, CACREP, or a regionally-accredited program.
- Program must include a practicum, consisting of at least 300 hours of client contact.
- A passing exam score must be submitted along with a plan for supervision.
- Must complete two calendar years of supervised clinical experience.
Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, including any history of disciplinary actions.
- The applicant must also:
- Have a current, active license for at least five years. Must be licensed at the highest independent level for at least three years of the five years.
- Verification of a passing exam score.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every two years.
